What is odd about this is even at the default setting of 3300 mine will throw the audible beeping warning that the batteries are low then stop working after a few minutes. I'll time it sometime but IIRC it wasn't much warning, maybe 5 minutes? This is with Eneloops and also brand new Ikea LADDA batteries. You would think I would get more warning. The "Easier to Read" manual says the range you can set it at is 3100mV-3400mV, so it is already on the higher side of the range at default. Sometime I'll have to try it set at 3400 and again at 3100 with the same batteries and see what difference it makes. The setting only sets the voltage when the alarm should go off, not when the scanner stops working. Set it to a high value and you'll have an hour or longer before it dies and setting it to the lowest voltage could produce an alarm and die at the same time from the increased current needed for the alarm signal.
