Hello everyone. I am new here and just getting back into scanning after many years away from it. I just purchased a bcd436hp and had a question about using a battery backup. Since most of the time I will be using my scanner when I am out and about it will be running on the batteries. What I was thinking of doing is purchasing a few of those 2600mah portable battery packs ( the type used to recharge a cell phone) and just plugging it into the charge port on the scanner. You can pick those up on the Internet for under $5.00 each. Has anyone tried this'd? Will it work? Is there any reason that it won't work or that I shouldn't do it? Seems like a way to run the scanner for a extended time while I am out. Thanks in advance

The external battery pack voltage needs to be the same as the AC power supply. Most of the battery packs to charge cell phones only put out 3.7 to 5 volts.

The scanner's input is only 5V, so that's not an issue.

The scanner needs 500mA of current to run - more than that to charge.

A powerbank is probably going to give it some time, but I have no idea how much. I haven't tried it myself, but there's no reason it shouldn't at least give you a short period of time (I'm completely guessing - an hour or two).

I have two banks in immediate reach right now - one is a Luxa2 7000mAh charger, which powers up my phone quite nicely. The other is a BioLite PowerLight 4400mAh flashlight/powerbank/lantern combo. According to my 436, when the Luxa is connected, it is indeed charging. When I plugged in the smaller BioLite device, the radio gave me the "USB connected" message, and I dealt with it - but then a few moments later it gave me the message again, and so on. Seems like the BioLite doesn't have enough oomph to run the radio (admittedly I tried both of these banks with the scanner turned on).

Another family member has a TP-Link 10,400mAh power bank which I might try tomorrow if I can pry it out of their hands.
