This is my first digital scanner so I dont know if mine is defective or if thats how they are now. When I adjust the squelch nob left or right I dont hear that typical squelch noise at all anywhere on the rotation of the nob. So I dont know where to adjust it to. Is this how its supposed to be or is mine defective?

When in digital mode that is normal. Some say the setting does nothing on a digital system, others recommend setting it about half way. Your scanner is functioning properly.

True also of any trunked system. The scanner uses trunked signalling to open/close squelch, so you won't hear a squelch hiss on a properly programmed and received trunk system. Try on a conventional frequency (try pressing HOLD, 146.94, HOLD, then adjust squelch).
