I have a UNIDEN BCD996XT scanner.
I know you can use CLOSE CALL on "conventional" transmissions
but is it possible to do the same for "trunk systems".

It will close call the trunked system frequencies but it won't follow conversations

On a trunked system set the scanner up for ID search, that way it will catch every thing on the trunked system.

cc trunking

close to the tower probably, but it might act as conventional and just jump to the next conversation.
it will lock on to the data channel (motorola) so just lock it out.
next to a car, it will listen to that car, been there done it.

close is the word

for the tower i was about 1/2 mile and for a car around 100 feet.
i was using a 396T and it was sitting on the seat with just the rubberduck on it.
