I had seen an thread stating Uniden was posting an update to allow P25 2 scanning. Can’t find it, want o buy a used BCD9996 and purchase the upgrade. Is it still available?

Not familiar with the thread you're talking about nor am I familiar with such an upgrade. I'm no expert but you may need the 996P2 to actually receive phase 2.

Sorry to burst your bubble but there's no such upgrade for the 996XT. Only the GRE PSR-800 & RadioShack Pro-18 released fw upgrades to get those respective models to track Phase-II, the latter of the two required shipment out to Whistler

Sorry to burst your bubble but there's no such upgrade for the 996XT

The BCD396XT and BCD996XT cannot be upgraded to receive P25 Phase 2. Don't waste your time looking for a thread since it cannot be done.

Sorry to burst YOUR bubble, but I just thought I’d excersize some Free Speech and ask a question. Probably still buy the thing, there’s enough analog and P25 P1 around here I can still listen to. I still have good memories of my Dad laying on the bed listening to the scanner I set up for him. When I became a dispatcher (pre 911), Mom said if he heard me he’d listen as long as he could.

Now on to the 996xt. We're still mostly phase one in my area and honestly on the simulcast system I monitor in some areas to me it outperformed the BCD536 I have and I'm pretty sure it outdid the 536 on analog by a noticeable margin on the stuff I actually checked.

I'd say if your area isn't all phase 2 and there's other stuff to listen to the 996xt is still a great scanner. Enjoy your memories of your dad. Not long ago I got a CB that I'll rarely use only because it was the one my mom used and I enjoy the memories.
