Hi Piney and all,

What do we know about clean beaches? Well, this is how we keep them clean! They eat everything in sight and scare the hell out of the tourists so I'm sending you some of our famous bathing beauties for your enjoyment, you'll have a WHALE of a time.

I usually go to either the Maryland or Deleware beaches and there is alot of activity
off shore in the Giantkiller areas.Lots of fighter activity off shore.
I take my bearcat 3000XLT a radio shack mag mount and attach it to the back of the chair
with the magnet.Really does not look that bad. Also take an external speaker. You will need it.
Also... I do use a ziplock bag and take a white wash cloth to reflect the sun for the radio.

from Godskidz:
Instead of worring about damaging your scanner ( for which I fully understand)
for one day at the beach why not leave it home?

from bwhite:
Laying around on the beach for more than 1/2 hour bores me to no end, gives me something to do.

PS--RCA, I know the diff between your avitar and your id, I knew that my response would get your attention as your rather gruff original post got everyone elses'.

Frankly I can't understand why anyone would want to bring cumbersome items to the beach unless her name is "mommy" or "grandma".

Hi again,

"Instead of worring about damaging your scanner ( for which I fully understand)
for one day at the beach why not leave it home?"

"I usually go to either the Maryland or Deleware beaches and there is alot of activity
off shore in the Giantkiller areas.Lots of fighter activity off shore."

THAT'S why! Among other things like the Coast Guard on fishing expeditions that's why I'm glad to live within spitting distance of the beach so I can leave the scanner at home. (;->)

Now you guys are discovering my style, first I get your attention, then slam it home. I'm glad you appreciate my cockeyed humor, that's what comes from spending too much time at the shore with a scanner. You'll bake your brains until they run out your left ear, then all that crap from the scanner will get sucked in the right, nature abhorrs a vacuum. Pity me, I only LIVE here and have a scanner so let this be a lesson to you!

Wow this thread got out of hand...(in a good and bad way)

I think the desicant in a plastic zip-lock or comparable purpose-built bag will do fine. I plan to try that method out.

Why not leave it at home? I just returned from two vacations where I did not take the scanner because it would be a hassle to carry, pack and fly with. I also didn't feel I'd have the time to myself to listen to it. At the beach I go down for a week at an ocean-front house on a huge, quiet and mostly empty beach. I have time to scan. Much like at home I think it will be fun to hear what's going on with the lifeguards and locals. At home I get NO military or Coast Guard stuff so I can now check that out also. Who knows I may get bored with it on day 1 and leave it in the beach house.

As far as noise and annnoying people, the waves drown out most sounds and this beach is empty enough that IF there are others on it they are 20 or 30 yards away. As far as damaging it or stealing it I suspect that is the risk you take. I doubt either will occur but if they do they do. I'm sure in the end the scanner is in more danger of me spilling my beer on it than being stolen.

Any other budget water protection ideas. (or bikini photos...)

I just got back vacation last week and I had my scanner on the beach every day. I used the zip lock back method, but cut a small hole on the bottom corner of the bag, just a bit smaller than the rubber duck antenna. When you stick the antenna through the hole, it seals up so you don't get any sand in the bag. I also had a case on the scanner as well and had no problems.

Hi again (this time serious),

Soupy, you and Jack should be 'laxing in the Carolinas 'bout now listening to the military comms. I'm out of VHF range so I'm listening on 6694 and it's been constant chatter and signals are good through the usual summer static. Where the heck is Broadway NJ?

Oh, are you that Soup Nazi in New York or Soupy Sales? (;->)

Tech note; all HF voice is USB except the Amateur 160, 80 and 40M bands which are LSB. For VHF frequencies and other details see the thread you can't miss in the military forum.
