I just got a Uniden Bearcat scanner BCD996P2 for Christmas. I live in NM the police are on NXDN96. Would I be better off returning the scanner and go with something else since I want to scan NXDN96. I never had a scanner so it's all new to me. I read that I would have to purchase a key for NXDN96. How much does that cost? Are there any scanners that would scan NXDN96 out of the box. Thank for the Help.
Merry Christmas.

The x60DN series from Uniden do "out of the box" NXDN (and DMR), but with one catch: they don't do trunked systems.

The NXDN key is $50 from Uniden. It and DMR are very much worth it.

Best to just get the key for NXDN.

This model with upgrade will show information like radio ids and will properly trunk track. Also this radio can also do P25, so you can use it to monitor way more. I own one these scanners purchased from a local hamfest and works very well.

Other radios lime 160DN and 260DN will pass audio, but won't show info and can't trunk track, plus they don't do P25.

Also make sure the NXDN isn't encrypted. If has E it's full time encrypted and e is part time encrypted.

the bcd 325p2 and bcd 996p2 will do trunked dmr, nxdn48 and nxdn96, after the paid upgrade. will also do dmr tier 3.. the nxdn will need LCN logical Channel numbers to follow the trunked system for nxdn 48 or nxdn96

It might take you about 30 minutes from registering the radio to finish entering the key.
If you can change a light bulb you can enter the key, it's that simple.

Programming the radio on the other hand.....
Might want to think about downloading the system first then tweaking it to fit your needs.

You will find lots of help on Radio Reference when the dreaded "Nothing to scan" pops up.

So, I would like to purchase the NXDN key for my BCD996P2 scanner; what is the website. I found some websites that starts with Uniden and the prices are $75 NXDN, $75 DMR, $75 Provoice, $30 for waterfall. Prices seem kind of high or is that a normal price. I knew to this scanning stuff. Been watching a lot of YouTube videos.
Thanks

Log in to the myuniden site register your scanner and the price for NXDN Key is $50
Also I do not see any Encryption Listed for Curry County
There is always something going on in Clovis NM, Curry County (police) for a small town of 37,311. Been here 2 years now. Moved here from AZ after 25 years. I'll get that register and the NXDN key. Thanks for your Help.

I live in a small town 10,000 in Northwest Tn
I guess I live in a large, small town compared to your 10,000. AZ was just getting too busy with traffic and people moving from California there. Still have family up there. I'll take a small town any day compared to AZ.

With NDXN and DMR, you'll find quite a bit more than without them.... Also, DMR is actively used in the ham bands....
