While I was in Toronto earlier this month, I decided to listen to a few taxi services. I picked Beck taxi since they are pretty much everywhere.

I'm a little confused how they use those 5 VHF frequencies. Are they all just various zones for dispatch or they each have a specific purpose? It was hard to follow what is what.

Beck actually has 10 channels.

They split the city up into zones and use channels like that. When it gets busy, they "open" extra channels and narrow the zones down even more. On a typical day, I think they only have 4 or 5 channels. But this weekend for example, the area surrounding Pride was on it's own channel because it was so busy.

That makes more sense because the 3 channels I heard talk on a Saturday night, had calls concentrated at YYZ, and two specific areas downtown. One time, the dispatcher mentioned "Attention all Drivers, the information channel is channel 5! Please go there".
