Beeps after transmissions

I decided to get back in the hobby of listening to my scanner. I have moved to a different location since I last listened to my radios. I put some fresh batteries into my Yupi-9000 and programmed the police frequencies into the scanner. The system they use is trunked so I programmed all of the frequencies and scan through them. After each trasmission there is a series of beeps and it holds on that frequency until the beeps finish. It is rather annoying! By the time the beeps are over and it starts scanning again, the next frequency will pick up and will beep because the other person already finished talking. Half the time i can never hear what is going on. I am guessing that this is the intention.

Anyway, does anyone else have agencies in your area that do this? Am I to assume that there is no way to resolve this?

Apparently I got back into the hobby at a good time. I read up on the new 396 and ordered myself one. It will be my first trunking scanner/digital too! I will probably be overwhelmed with all the radio can do.

That's not the agency, it's the fact that your receiver can't follow a trunked system. The beeps are part of the trunking info the system transmits.

Am I to assume that there is no way to resolve this?

Your 396, once you get it, will resolve the problem.

That sounds like an EDACS system. There are up to 5 beeps in the timeout sequence. And yes, once you get a trunking scanner and program the system correctly, you won't have to listen to them.

I sure hope I can figure out how to program it correctly! It seems complicated. I have been reading through the online manual all evening and don't get my new radio until thursday.

Are these beeps actually for the system or to hinder ones ability to monitor the system? I've heard some agencys will have a silence between frequencies to not allow following of the communications. Boo!-Poltergeisty :-0

Don't worry, between your reading the manual, and the rest of us here, you will get it set up OK. The only let-downs would be encryption, or digital on EDACS (which no scanner to date will handle--it's a long story). But don't worry about them in advance.

I am monitoring the EDACS system with no problem now. I also programmed the Kentucky State Police post that is 30 miles away and pick it up farely well (some transmissions break up.) I've tweaked the digital threashold to get the best reception possible I think.

They're for the system's use.

I don't know exactly what you heard ("a silence between frequencies" doesn't convey any meaning) but the only thing done to prevent monitoring is encryption, whether electronic or by using words that don't mean anything to the general public.
