I am new to scanning and I need some info. I live in Bohemia, NY, in Suffolk County on Long Island and I'm looking to get a scanner (in the $200 - $250 range) and I need some suggestions as to which scanner to buy. I want to be able to scan the Suffolk County PD, the Bohemia and Sayville fire departments and be able to monitor communications from nearby Islip MacArthur Airport. Which scanner is capable of monitoring all of these frequencies? Where can I find out if Suffolk County PD is a trunked system and if they are (or going to be) digital? Please help me if you can.

Well, the database on this site is one place to start.
Have a look at this link:

Next, join the discussion in the New York forum. There are numerous people who
may be able to answer your questions.

You may want to acquaint yourself with Al42 , he's from your neck-of-the-woods ,(so to speak)

Yeah, sort of the top of the neck, while LIGUY is from the bottom on the other side.

Hiya LIGUY. I'd suggest the Uniden BCD246 if you can't go higher than $250. http://www.bearcatscanner.com/ has them for $214 including shipping. They'll pick up everything you want - PD on 800, air and FD (for which you need both VHF-lo and 450 here). Read the Uniden forum. There's not much LI activity in the NY forum but if you have any questions shoot me a private message here on the board.

If you want a preview of a Uniden scanner on Suffolk PD, follow the link in my signature.
