Best scanner to adjust close proximity scanning?

Looks like you can't really adjust the proximity on the 436hp too much. Is there a scanner just made for this purpose? Something that can scan stuff close by only, but not only 50 feet away?

Can you explain what it is that you are trying to listen to? CloseCall will pick up "some" signals that are close by.

There is no scanner that has the setting you are looking for, however, as other members have said above, there are ways to help you do this. On some scanners you can also use zip code programming that may also help.

If you are scanning by zip code, create favorites lists which cover only the local systems and sites you wish to cover. You can reserve zip code or GPS scanning for travelling. That works well with the BCD436HP.

The local database is out of date and mismatched most of the time for my area.

I want to set the range a little farther and find stuff close by but not 20 feet away. There's no way to tune in based on the signal strength on any scanner? Or even just a way to see what frequencies are near by and what strength they are? Or something like that?

The database is created by members who have verified the information before submitting it, if it is out of date it is because no one in your area is submitting the new information to the database. Hope you will submit verified findings so it can be updated.

Newer scanners have two settings, scan/search which will pick up anything in range, but you can not limit that range (such as 1 mile, 5 miles, 10 miles). The other setting is close call/spectrum sweep which will pick up close by strong signals, this setting also is not limited to distance (per se) it will pick up close by strong signals that could be 20 feet, 500 feet or more. These are the only options, as stated before, no matter how many times you ask.

as a strange example.
i have a pro 164.
i set signal stalker up and was driving out to dinner. (close call equivalent)
i picked up a NOAA station (162.4) in south Venice Florida.
i was 5 MILES away from the tower.
i was at jackaranda blvd and rt 41 the tower is on border rd
the area i was in had no radio towers or any use for radio for miles.
it really does depend on where you and your radio are.
use the search function on the radio and turn up the squelch to cut down on far away hits.

Turn squelch up or use attenuation as was suggested to you in post #3. Remove the antenna if you only want the extremely close stuff to break squelch

Or even just a way to see what frequencies are near by and what strength they are? Or something like that?
An SDR would be better suited for this. The SDS100 has a paid waterfall upgrade which serves this purpose. No such animal exists with the 436HP unfortunately (as of date of this posting)
