Can someone please explain to me what Birmingham Fire's Medium Rescue apparatus are? What is the difference between the Medium Rescue apparatus and 1's Heavy Rescue? What different equipment do they carry? What calls are they dispatched on? Why do we have them? What stations do they operate out of (I believe I’ve heard 2 and 10, any others?)

Also, is 1’s Heavy Rescue a permanently staffed apparatus? I know over the years they have gone back and forth on this.

Sorry, I’m full of questions tonight. Ha ha.

Thanks,

William

The Medium Rescue is a lighter/smaller version of the Heavy Rescue. It's an International rescue unit.

Station 2 is the only one with a Medium Rescue right now. It rolls on everything the Heavy rolls on. People trapped, in water, off cliffs etc... The Heavy at 1 is staffed by the crew from the engine unless they're out of service. The Heavy at 10 is staffed by the engine.

You can see a picture of 2's Medium Rescue on this page of my site: http://www.dave911.com/2007/08/ema-drill-2007-part-3.html

Hope that helps!

Thanks Dave. Still a bit confused though. What's the point of 2's Medium Rescue? I mean, why have that and 1's Heavy - especially if they are dispatched on the same call? More manpower?

So is 10's Heavy Rescue only used if 1's Heavy is out of service, or are they separated by run territories?

Are Truck companies still dispatched on extrications as well?

Ok, new subtopic since we are talking about apparatus....

When is Birmingham going to get some tractor drawn aerials?!?!?! Those are the coolest things ever!

:)
