To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.
If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.
To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.
The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

We've seen a lot of customers debating between the BKR9000 and the VP8000. Lot's of similarities between the two and they have a similar price point. With existing Viking customers, the VP8000 is a no brainer as they tend to use Vault with their feature licensing such as sucking features out of exiting VP900's and using those with their VP8000 orders. With new customers, the debate tends to be Made in Japan versus Made in the USA and if DMR support will come to the BKR9000.

Buy the Harris or BK, stick this on there. 99% of the end users wouldn't know the difference, they just look at the brand name and make their decision off that.
I try telling Moto customer this all the time.
Does anyone know if the BKR9000 is capable of receive only. Also, can the BKR series be programmed with the same RES software used for the KNG2 series? I had a dealer tell me the BKRs have to be programmed with different software.

BKRs use standard RES AFAIK. The BKR5000 can do RX only. So I would assume it would be the same.

The RES software can go from portable: KNG, KNG2, BKR5000,BKR9000 and mobile M-150. You just have to go through and change the buttons around to fit the different radio type.

A big advantage for fire/rescue users with the BK KNG/BKR radios, is the option of pre-programming one or more available Command Zones in the radio. Like the older CDF (Cal Fire) TK-790 VHF mobiles radios, the newer Kenwood NX series radios have the single "Tactical Zone" function for creating an incident zone of various channels from the radio. I am not certain the VP8000 has the Tactical Zone capability, as I haven't seen it touted in the sales literature.
