RR had removed the Boston feed, then put it back up, then the whole site crashed and nobody could get on, so I would say they didn't get a passing grade on this one. Luckily someone else had a feed running elsewhere, so those who knew about it were able to still follow the action.

“At the peak we had about 160,000 people listening to the feed,” said Lindsay Blanton, the company’s chief executive. “This is the largest event that we’ve seen.”

When RR drops a feed or becomes overwhelmed... remember there are other places to find a feed. I had no trouble finding Boston PD on Shoutcast, Justin.TV and UStream. No rules on TAC channels either. I listened to everything right up to "suspect in custody".

Ustream hit nearly 300k users at "suspect in custody". Now that is scalability. If people were listening to broadcastify, at least they wouldn't have been able to hear the ops channels. There are no rules on some of these other sites.

What's the use of listening to RR/broadcastify if they are not broadcasting? Might as well watch a News channel if I wanted partial/edited information. They also listen to the scanners and edit what they hear.

If RR and broadcastify want to remain relevant as a source of information during times of national emergency/interest, two things need to happen.

1. The feeds need to be available and uninterupted.
2. Have the capacity to host

Otherwise, RR is a great place for the everyday enthusiast. Check for alerts, then find a feed that will stay up.

We had a lot of lessons learned this week that we'll be able to roll into the infrastructure for Broadcastify. We apologize to those that had problems accessing the site during the load.

I'll update the this forum next week with stats, lessons learned, and next steps.

Honestly, I think we did a pretty good job considering the situation. We'll do even better next time a situation like this occurs. More to follow...
