To be totally fair about it, system downtime is a rare event. If I said that I am listening to one site or another for most of my waking hours, most days, it's almost a true statement. It is VERY rarely that I see any evidence of a service outage.
The system has recently (I can't say how recently, I actually don't know) added more trunked channels to every site. The Melbourne site is up to 16 frequencies and the others are up to 22 if not more. Capacity has increased and downtime is, like I said, extremely rare. Using the FCC menu option in my radios I'm seeing that even though the system is carrying a LOT of traffic, the system utilization rarely passes 60 percent capacity even during the heaviest traffic times.
What does concern me is that the latest generation of Harris radios seems to be a bit lacking in
sensitivity compared to the 7100s and other radios of the previous generation. If that turns out to be too much of a problem, then the fix will probably be to add more sites, and that's not going to make anybody happy when it's easy to show that four sites have worked well for over 20 years now.
Suddenly needing more sites just to maintain the same coverage would NOT go over well.
I do hope, for their sake, that Harris works to improve their current radio types so that they are truly at least the equal of the previous generation radios.
No matter what brand of equipment the county is using, I want it to WORK WELL. As a taxpayer I say that we deserve nothing less.
