So I picked up a used Pro-649. It powers up, display works, key beep works, I was able to do a factory reset, I can program in channels, and the volume and squelch both seem to function. But it isn't able to hear anything, not even the local weather station. My first thought was antenna, so I tried a new one, and opened it up and checked the antenna connection (which seems fine). I also programmed in one of the FRS channels and keyed up an FRS radio a few feet away, thinking it should pick THAT up even without an antenna. It did not.

If I turn the squelch down, I get "static" as I would expect, but nothing else.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what else I could look for? I'm thinking that the front end is probably blown out on it. I don't think it would be worth fixing, so it may just go in the electronics recycle bin.

Thanks.

Not worth fixing. It sounds like it has been desensitized by having a strong signal or transmission very close to it, probably repeatedly.

:) Hi, I have an old RS PRO-34 that was acting intermittently. When I opened it up, I found there were a couple of circuit boards 'connected' together by multiple pin arrays. After separating these boards, I found miniscule oxidation on some of the pins. After cleaning these pins and receiving connectors carefully and reassembling the radio, it worked perfectly for many many years (this was quite a few years ago so bear with me). If your a tinkerer like I am, maybe you can look for a (any) loose connections or oxidation inside? Might 'restore' its proper functioning? I would explore a few more options before chucking it. It would help if you had a large magnifying glass to also check for defective solder points (I know it is not a given but why not try). :)
