I guess I'm just from a different generation. We held ourselves together and didn't expect praise for simply doing our job. I guess times are different these days with safe spaces and participation trophies. Personally, I would have called 911 first, but again, that's just me.
The generation without empathy? The generation without understanding that someone who's not trained to deal with such stressful things just witnessed something horrible?
Which generation was that? I want to make sure I avoid them.
I've heard a lot of similar traffic on my system. Our non-public safety users have access to a talk group that will put then in direct voice contact with our PD dispatchers. I've listened to our dispatchers handle these sorts of things in -exactly- the same way.
That was professionalism. That was doing the right thing. It was a calm and well trained dispatcher. She took control of the situation like she was trained.
I've also heard bus drivers come completely apart at the seams when they've witnessed similar things.
I think that dispatcher needs a raise and the bus driver probably needs some trauma counseling. Most people are not trained to deal with situations like that and don't have the tools to cope. She drives a school bus. Give her some freakin' slack.
But I'm sure all the experts on this hobby website would have done much better in the same situation.
