• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I understand that amateur bands do not allow encryption, but what about business radio? Can a company purchase a license for spectrum that allows for voice encryption? If so, does anyone know how much it costs?

Encryption is legal on business band frequencies in the USA. Doesn't cost extra to license a channel for encrypted or unencrypted.
The encryption is a function of the radio. You might pay more for some analog only radios to add encryption, but most (if not all) digital radios have it included.

Thanks for the reply. Any idea what it costs to license spectrum use (UHF or VHF) from the FCC?

Below 470 mHz, a business/industrial pool license is $260 per call sign.
If you are going to operate from the same place, day in and day out, you will need coordination which is performed by a private company of your choosing and that can range widely in price depending on the complexity of your station and congestion of local bands.

That is going to be totally dependent on how many frequencies you need and what kind of base radios or repeaters you want. Locale will likely affect cost, too. Urban being more complex than rural.

Filing fees are listed on the FCC's website, but they are only part of the picture. You'll need to reach out to a coordinator to help you find your frequencies, and if you're doing repeaters or more complex systems, you may need engineering assistance as well.

Depending on the digital modes, you may not need encryption if you're just trying to keep the average Joe with a scanner from listening in.

I would still like to make use of encryption, preferably while using digital mode. I guess I will have to find a coordinator that can tell me what options are available. It's hard trying to nail down which units support encryption and which do not.

FWIW, most radio systems dealers will be happy to help you with licensing, coordination, system design and product specs. That's what they do. I would urge you to sit down with one or more dealers so that you can describe what you think you might need and find out from them how to get it done and how much it will cost.

Most, if not all NXDN and DMR radios have encryption. Not good encryption, but it will keep folks from listening with either DSD or a subscriber radio.
