Police and firefighters in Butte will get new, long-sought portable radios next year and tower fixtures to boost their signals under a $1.6 million contract with Motorola — the biggest-ticket equipment item in the recently enacted county budget.

My guess is this will be part of the Statewide System similar to Bozeman's move over the past few years.

They have been talking about it for some time. It follows recommendations in the RM region that is VHF heavy to use 700/800 in urban areas to free up VHF capacity. Worse pretty well and is user transparent, which the older generation of administrators and radio shops failed to recognize and has held back some infrastructure improvements due to lack of some fundlementals.

At a meeting up that way a few months back, many still thought that 800 didn't work anywhere but in a major city... and Butte is far from that.

The highlighted text above is confusing, did you mean to say "Works pretty well" or something else?
