Button not working.

I have a Yaesu FRG 9600 and the Zero button on the keyboard has stopped working. Before I pull it apart, is it likely to be a simple mechanical fault (i.e dirty contact) or is it more serious? (i.e. circuit failure)

More than likely, underneath the plastic “zero” button is what is known as a “popple” button. That is a metal dome over the printed circuit board (PCB) that when pressed, it completes the circuit on the PCB itself. If that is the case and the popple button has failed, the PCB will need to be replaced since popple buttons are not serviceable.

The keypad switches in the FRG-9600 are small ALPS Tactile type switches.
The original part number was KHH10912. I tried to find a datasheet but no luck.

You should be able some that will fit from places like Mouser or Digikey.
You'll need to measure the old to find a substitute that will physically fit. These switches are still fairly common today.

I've replaced a bunch of the same exact type in older Icom radios like the R7000, R9000, R71 models.
I think the type used in the FRG-9600 are called Snap-In type. They snapped into four holes on the pcb and then you soldered the pins.

That will be good news for @pawncob. Sounds like this may be a somewhat easy fix if that ALPS switch is indeed the problem. Let’s hope so.

I may be on to something here. Looking at the OEM ALPS switches, I noticed that “KHH” was part of ALPS catalog switch numbers and all it needed was an “S” in front. Then I Googled the part number SKHH10912 and Google Gemini came back with this:

The OP may find a replacement with these leads. I would still open up the Yaesu FRG-9600 to make sure the correct part is ultimately ordered.
