I have seen xts5000's on the show. What is the purpose of having thse if they use conventional analog channels? I guess it would be good so they could interop with other systems that utilize digital capabilities, but is there any other reason? I don;t believe they use P25 or ENC...

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Motorola XTS (or any ASTRO line radio) can be ordered as conventional/analog only, which reduces its price tag. They can be had at a decent price on state contract pricing. Many of the accessories for the Jedi line of radios can be used with the XTS line so they do not have to buy new chargers, speaker mics, etc.

If the need arises they can be upgraded to trunking, digital, or whatever the need may be. My former employer back in the day converted to XTS3000's from Sabers without the digital option (which was several years away at the time). They elected to pay later than paying now due to budget issues.

My impression is that at least one of them (if not most/all/many) have the XTS5000...only due to the default reflective trim found on the XTS5000 from the factory which isn't an option on the 2500's.

Anybody catch the episode tonight where they noticed the hunters had the scanner going? Unfortunately, I think their attitude about it is probably the typical reaction law enforcement has, more often than not. It's a shame it has come to that.

Yeah I laughed at that one...the game wardens were using a portable radio to scan for people poaching earlier that episode. Then they were upset to learn about the scanner in the suspected poacher's truck.

I noticed more the piece of crap antenna that looked like his dog ate it :D But the attitude was appropriate I think. The poachers were using a scanner in the commission of a crime. They were also using FRS/GMRS radios in the commission of the crime. Aren't the police allowed to listen to them while committing a crime? This isn't the same as a person lawfully driving down the street listening. Apples and oranges.

Marine band radios seem to be the device of choice for many hunters (legitimate). I monitor the marine band occasionally when I'm out and about. The traffic has nothing to do with boats and ships.

The advantages in areas away from the coasts and large bodies of water are dealing with very little interference and the availability of some fairly good equipment with higher power than the other choices. Sometimes hunters will use ham radio equipment illegally but some hams have been known to take exception to that and bring them grieve.

Are the shoulder-mount video cams ordinary gear, or are they there just for the show?

If you're asking if they carry them normally, I think that's a no.

Never seen one on a warden, and one of my old coworkers got picked up about 2 months ago, and when he listed all the equipment he was issued (color me jealous), a camera was not among the items (GPS, night vision, M1A, 870, duty & backup guns, take-home truck).

Far from Biden's **** show
I have heard for years and continue to hear F&G units check in with dispatch on 151.415 & 151.430 repeaters in Kern County, Ventura County, Santa Barbara County and Los Angeles County. As others have mentioned here the repeater freq and PL tone is different depending on the area. There is very little radio traffic but the dispatch or base has called on units and they do check in. I think they ran some plates and responded to a trespassing call. I haven't heard anything too exciting. The repeaters are on most major mountain tops around the state so they usually have a strong signal. I have never heard any of the traffic in P25.

rolncode - i think you mean M14 - not M1.. they look similar but every F&G I have seen uses M14

bulk of their radios are TK-790 so no to p25 790 is analog only

did he get a pretty glock22 with game warden on the slide?

Now that I been watching the show I notice most of the voices from Squad 3320 the one stands out the most is warden Stoots in the show he is station out of San Benito county, but 90% of the time I hear him in south Monterey county.
