I am eagerly looking at the new HP1 scanner. I am also thinking about getting a new XT line of radios. In either event, I'm looking at the db with a little closer scrutiny.

I was wondering who was responsible for entering the geotag information for the Los Altos PD? Here is what I'm talking about:
RadioReference.com - Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference Database

The radius is 35 miles??? The city is no where this big. Looks like someone simply entered the county data and duplicated it.

I'm not trying to argue but to understand. Any reason this isn't more like 5-10 miles around center of city?

You won't hear those Los Altos frequencies over the mountains on the coast. Los Gatos barely comes in with a good UHF antenna. I have heard the Palo Alto and Mountain View Fire repeaters on VHF on a regular basis...

Right, my point is that 35 miles is unrealistic. It looks like someone just copied the county location information across all of the cities within the county...

...and that is a bad thing...

DB admins based on info received from submitters. Maybe there is a way to change the radius on the radio itself?

Also, it looks like the default for every agency in Santa Clara Co was set at 35. Los Altos was using the default radius. I changed Los Altos to 10 miles.

What is the radius info on Los Altos' FCC license?

I don't think there is radius information. They just show the tower location.

I was playing around with Streets to see what the difference between a 10mi and 5mi radius. Even though I'm pretty sure the PD is monitorable at ten miles out, the question is how appropriate is it for location based scanning? Isn't the point to enable the system when you're within the jurisdiction?

I don't think Los Altos is unique in the way it has been treated in the db. I think most city PDs within Santa Clara county have a similar issue. Even though I can hear SJPD from Los Altos... what's the point of using the GPS, if I'm going to enable it anytime I'm in the county??
