Hey all, around here (central WI) they were trying to use plain language instead of 10-codes for a while and unfortunately it kinda collapsed, which i find a bit disappointing, as in the Amateur service we almost NEVER use any type of "code", with the infrequent exception of using "QSL", "QTH", "QST", and a few others, but this is not the norm, pretty much anywhere ya listen on the ham voice bands it`s plain language all the way. Since we are talking about radio communication, not military operations, maybe the standard should be the ITU phonetic alphabet. (it is surprisingly similar and ITU have been a standards setting organization since Long before NATO).

All *I* would like to hear is the `universal' use of *1* phonetic alphabet! Where I am *some* `officers' go as far as making up their own right then and there *and* sometimes even they'll change it right in the middle of what they are trying to get across! {YIKES!} I'm surprised that the dispatcher doesn't, at the very least, "ride their case" about these `mid-course corrections'. (Of course if one of them did so the complaints would probably about the dispatcher rather than the`perp' who actually did the `deed' {GRIMACE!})

Ah the good old "interoperability". One of the words I hate most. Well I'm from the US and not Canada but based on my signature you can tell where I stand on the use of 10 codes.

Yes I DO play nicely when on calls and go along with the plain language (for the most part) but anywhere else, texting, emails, everyday conversations, even on my notes and paperwork at work is ALL done in 10 codes. Why? Because it's a heck of a lot quicker and a heck of a lot easier.
