Canadian Database Metro Hops...

How about including a few more cities in that.

I know we don't have nearly the amount of cities as those of the US but to not include at the very least Canada's capital city Ottawa is a bit of a muse....

Here's a few suggestive cities:

Ottawa - ON
Saskatoon - SK
Quebec City - QC
Fredericton - NB
Halifax - NS
Charlottetown - PEI
St. Johns - Nfld

I know, Ontario has a few major cities, and that they shouldn't all be listed, but I'd say atleast include 1-2 from each province. Heck, even The Northwest Territories has a major city Yellowknife which also brings me to some stuff that I see that has been deleted from Nunavut which I put in for Baffin Island.

The current Metro Hop only lists the following:
Calgary
Edmonton
Greater Vancouver Regional District
Montreal
Toronto
Winnipeg

I always figured the metro designation is only really relevant when county boundaries are crossed. For example, Toronto is a valid metro designation because you have the GTA, Mississauga (Peel Region), Markham (York), and Pickering/Ajax/Whitby/Oshawa (Durham), all kind of together as one actual entity. Yellowknife? I'm not sure I'd consider that a metro region.

As for things in Nunavut being deleted, what exactly was it? I moved the Mary River Project data from the main (territory-wide) page into the proper "county" of Qikiqtaaluk/Baffin. That was pretty much the only NU data in the system.

But I still think that the Metro Hop data should still be updated a wee bit more.

I think that will be it for the province of Quebec unless we (Ontario DB and Quebec DB admins) agree to add "Gatineau" (or Outaouais area) to the Ottawa metro area. I lived in Gatineau for 10 years in the past and I think it would really make sense to tie them up together.

Any Ontario DB admin or users comments on this suggestion ??

Personally to me lumping Gatineau and Ottawa together could be a tad confusing for unilingual folks since 99% of Gat would be French and 99% of Ott would be english.

Got a point there ... but not to neglect also is the fact that there is a lot a bilingual folks in the area (both sides of the river). Number in mind is 35 to 40 % - could be wrong but it is based on my prior experiences of offering services to the public of the area.

Maybe the question to ask ourself is should we be inclusive or exclusive ?

An other idea could be to add a link for the Gatineau DB in the Ottawa DB with a couple of lines explaining or stating the difference or whatever ...

That would make sense to me. Then new users would have a good handle on what systems might be of interest to them, depending on their language/languages of choice.

Or even have both "Metro Areas" and crosslinks to the other in each.

Out of curiosity, what exactly are the guidelines on what goes under the metro area or county? For example, frequencies pertaining to the municipal government of Halifax, or for businesses in Halifax could go in either a Halifax metro area database entry, or under Halifax county. Which would be proper?

I don't think it works that way. You just define a metro area as containing a number of counties (and/or independent cities, if your state/province has them). Then all the stuff in those counties show up in the metro area.

I think Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa and Halifax should be defined as Metro.
