Thanks for replying. The radio system is poor quality, most likely due to reception - more tower sites would fix this. Trust me.

I will update my 396T programming with the freqs you have supplied.

Didnt mean to start a war, just trying to hear what is going on.

Dont forget to have fun with this hobby!

Yeah, from where I live in Roselle Park, NJ, the State PD TRUNKED system for northern NJ comes in horrible! I don't even have them programmed into my scanner because it's just a waste of space. Their system/reception was MUCH better back in the early 90's when they used conventional frequencies in the 154-156 MHz band. I've said this before and I'll say it again, all of this new digital technology is WORSE than the way it used to be.

Is the State Police union complaining about the radios for the officers safety or it some scanner listeners that don't like the system? I am sure you would read about it if the Troopers PBA had a problem.

There have been complaints from the troopers and stations that's why they have added 7 fill in sites and maybe a few more to take care of the coverage problems. It's a known fact that there are dead spots through out the state and attention is being given to correct these.

I was just going to tell GCR33 the same thing. Thanks for beating me to it High Pockets! I have read in the paper on a few occasions how the STATE PD was complaining about their radio reception since they switched to the 800 MHz years ago. MANY PD's have experienced problems with P25, TRUNKED, EDACS, and digital changes that costed them so much money, yet provide worse reception and worse coverage. Coverage area is always larger when you use conventional radios, this can save an officer's life!! But does the state of NJ care? No, they rather waste more money switching all of the PD's to digital radios instead of lowering property taxes or providing more money to the public schools.

I guess when they switch they get some kind of Fed funds, Digital is nice and clear, but, in a noisy environment, they stink. I heard a stop on Rt70 the other day and the traffic going by made it impossible to make out what the cop was saying, dispatch had to tell him to close the window.

Jeez. I didnt want to start another war, was just asking how other scanner hobbyists solved the poor reception problem in western Burl Co. Bigger antennas? Pre-amps?

As suggested, Ive picked up the 800mhz after market antenna from RS. Not much difference. I do have a discone thats a few years old, but i need new coax. Now, without causing a raucus about how the price of copper is up and thats going to affect the quality of insulation thereby making gas prices skyrocket and somehow mixing in talk about the budget for FY2011, does anybody have any opinions on what coax would be good for my situation?

Im going to be stretching it about 50 yards from the chimmney to the living room and then into the BCD396T. What do ya'll think about grounding? Pre-amps?

For those whove replied with honest input and attempts to help me improve reception, thank you. The onesie twosies who brought all that other crap into this thread, move on. This isnt for real.

Thanks again.
