• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I've never actually played with the Lil Wil. Personally, I prefer the NMO-27 for my low band needs. 48" tall, rugged, light (weighs about as much as a 2 ft fiberglass antenna) and as such is more cost effective as it takes advantage of commonly available (and serviceable) parts. As stated on the nmo side of the story, the fact that NMO has pretty much been the defacto commercial antenna mounting system since Motorola introduced it in the late 1960's (replacing 3/8-24 in 30 MHz and up application) is only a testament to how reliable the design is.

If the antenna is properly tuned, the only real difference you will find in performance related to gain which really only results in a 3dB difference in most applications (in cb).

Which antenna brand do you prefer? I'm leaning towards a sirio turbo 5000, but am worried about the roof of my vehicle warping.

Larsen. Won't warp your roof and looks like a commercial install.

Second favorite is a 10/11m antenna made by Tram/Browning (used to be called the penetrator).

A nmo solution would be the lowest stress.

Stick with an American brand that you can get replacement parts for. It'll save you money in the long run.

Antennas are governed by the law of physics. No one makes "magic pixy dust" for antennas that makes them work beyond the limits of physics. No manufacturer has a secret formula that makes their piece of metal sticking up in the air work better than someone else's.

When comparing similar antenna designs, the performance should be identical. Where you will see "claims" of better performance, it is either shady marketing, not comparing like for like dB numbers, or some odd "gimmick".

Stick with a known commercial antenna manufacturer. Larsen has been proving themselves for decades, and I've been using them exclusively in public safety environments for many years without a single failure.

A properly installed NMO mount won't stress your vehicle roof. A properly installed NMO mount won't leak, and can easily have other antennas installed if you interests change. Magnet mounts will damage the paint and just look amateurish. If you want an antenna to work properly, install it correctly, tune it correctly and maintain it correctly.

How do you park your car in the garage with a 102" whip installed?
