Not sure whether this really belongs here or the CB Forum, mods please move accordingly.

I want to know what are some common channels still used in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento Regions for CB? Finally got a CB and in reading I've heard Ch. 9 and 19 being "common" emergency channels...

I don't live in the Bay Area so I cannot comment on regional use. However, I would say that if you had to rely on a CB radio to save you (anyone), you would be in dire straights. People do not respect the rule where channel 9 is to only be used for that sort of thing. There is unlikely to be someone monitoring it (I'm sure someone will reply and say otherwise). The idea of channel 19 being used as a "trucker" channel also seems to have fallen by the way, at least here in northern CA. Here they seem to have taken a liking to channel 17.

Thanks avtar! I wouldn't put my life in the hands of CB either, hence why I'm a ham and a CB is a "side thing".

It is helpful. Granted I keep my speed, etc reasonable but there are sometimes I like to play. Always good to have an extra eye.

Generally channel 17 is used from the north Calif border to about Bakersfield where channel 19 (the highway channel) is used.
If you ever watch Ice Road Truckers their rigs are set on channel 19 and that's what's in use in Canada and Alaska.
Here in central Calif channel 19 is sorts dead and 17 is VERY active!

CH 17 is the monitoring/call channel in the SF/eastbay metro area, however I think most of the U.S. uses CH 19. When you make a contact on those channels, try to move to another channel so that the truckers and others monitoring aren't forced to listen to your conversation. I would never have a CB in my car, unless I had a long commute in the country environment. It just gets too stupid. It's like being in a bad neighborhood. Good luck.
