• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Are you into the CB Radio craze?

No.

Do you own your own CB Radio?

Yes.

Please comment what you like or dislike about the CB Radio hobby.

Well I live in close vicinity of an Interstate and 2 major US/State highways and hear very little radio traffic on any channels other than Ch. 19. And, as in a lot of places, that channel is not very family-friendly.

While CB does seem to have its place in some places, it would seem that in others it is a "dead horse" and keeps getting beat upon a regular basis...

Thank You.

You're welcome. 10-4 ;)

I got my first CB equipment back in 1967. By 1973 I was ready to "sell out". I ended up getting into it deeper than ever (very long story). I stayed in it head ver heels until about 1979. I still have all the gear, antennas, coax, crystals, etc. I often think I should sell it all, but then wonder if I'll ever get back into it.

Important tool

I happen to own two CB's. One is a HT, one a mobile. They are as essential in travel to me as my cell and scanners. CB has saved my hide on at least three occasions. Not to mention that CB is a great tool for us hunter types in the pursuit of yummy furry things like Bambi, Thumper, and Tom the Turkey! Sometimes I have learned of road hazards with my CB before I heard of it on the scanners. I also am a fast one to assist others that are in need if I hear a call on 9, or if I hear a 10-33 on 19, and if I am hunting and hear trouble on 12, I'mma comm'in runnin! So if your ever stranded in my neck of the woods, and a white suburban with two to four magmount antennas whippin in the wind stops to assist, and just happens to call for a friend on the CB, that happens to get there faster than Mr. AAA tow truck, just pass me a coke and I'll point you in the direction of the nearest CB sales shop. WEG!

I forgot,I still have my old Regency "Romper" in the shed! I suppose it may come in handy when all that EMP comes our way from one of these countries we sell weapons to,lol! Oops, off topic here!
Anyway, those old tube radios just have a sound that's hard to get from semiconductors.

Yep, several base and mobile units constantly in service for 40+ years for daily local ragchew sessions. Been communicating with mostly the same folks over that period, and it's been an excellent source of new operators to Elmer into the Amateur Radio ranks By far the majority of the new HAMs have continued CB participation, and CB activity is still going strong in my area.

My main area of interest is reviving and running "back in the day" equipment, both HAM and CB.

I have one in the car for my daily 40 mile commute on the interstate. It has helped me avoid traffic backups several times. One more interesting time was when a guy's couch fell out of the back of his pickup. The truckers were warning everone to avoid the right lane for a couch in the road.

I have one sitting on the top shelf in the shack. Its not hooked up and is covered in dust. I did hook it up about a year ago to see if it worked. I talked to a guy about 15 miles away. Not bad for 4 watts. I like 10 and 6 meters better.

Don't look a gift horse...

The problem with CB, FRS, and yes, even ham radio is that the general public would rather not get in to all those geeky radio thingies with all the limitations and peculiarities.

They have cell phones. They "understand" the interface. They don't care about the infrastructure that it takes to make it work.

And these days, if you do care about communications, you're either labeled a nerd, or you're thought to be some kind of religious survivalist. The same goes for most other infrastructures. The public is being taken care of. We have our bread and circuses.

Yeah, I have all of these things. I even use them every once in a while. However, I'm not going to say it is any more useful than riding a horse. Sure, there are places where a horse is probably the ideal vehicle for getting around. There aren't many such places left, but they do exist. And so it is for CB, FRS, Ham Radio, GMRS, and so forth.
C'mon, man. We gotta teach our kids what radio is all about! Don't let them dumb down on cell phone games, and other junk. That's OK after they lean how to PTT and RTL. I want to take responsibility to teach my kids that kind of responsibility, in communications, radios, etc. Even the Wife is a little interested. By the way, we are Nerds, until they realize that nerdy things are really useful. Until then, grin and bear it. (I'll take a four-leg drive horse! The Dog and Cat seem to get around really well, too!)

LOL. Now that's funny.

not funny. why is the us government actively building and maintaining internment camps some of which can hold a million plus people?

why does fema headquarters have over a million brand new coffins in storage?

why is the government trying to pass legislation that you will be fined 1000 dollars/day for not having health insurance and fines for not getting your flu shot!!!!

i don't put anything past the us government these days.

this includes shutting down access to cell network, internet, etc.

that frothing at the mouth racist and anti american terrorist in DC is stacking government with all his similar minded cronies. i seem to remember another politician doing the same thing back in the 40's in germany.

a few years ago i would have laughed and thought it was crazy, but not any more. no i absolutely do not put anything past the US Government anymore.

we are in dangerous times and we need to avail ours selves to every form of wireless communications and also stockpile ammo and firearms, canned goods and learn how to live self sufficiently.

just my opinion and not intended to start a flame war or other wise stray too far off topic.

^^^ These wild claims are nothing more than urban myths, designed to scare the gullible. They have already been debunked, and information regarding these myths are widely available on the internet.

Pray tell, you don't happen to be wearing a tinfoil hat at this moment, are you?

Don't worry about me. If TSHTF, I'm very well prepared. Probably more so than many of the conspiracy theorists, doomsday believers, and fringe lunatics out there.

Just because I spent eight years in the military doesn't mean I drank the government-issued kool aid.

Yep. But if the average American is as gullible and ill informed as the average RR user seems to be, maybe we SHOULD be afraid.

I think we should be buying stock in Reynolds Aluminum!

Back on track - I have mobile in my 4x4. On most group runs I do we have 1-2 hams, a handful of FRS, but most rigs I run with have a CB. So still useful.

There are so many stupid people out there who know nothing about what is going on in this world. There quick to jump at making a dumb A$$ comment that means nothing to the topic that is posted. Number one. There is a ton of info out there that points out clear as day to just what the Government is about to do to us Americans. I agree with James Bond 007 100%. Why? If you see what is really going on. You will get a sence of just what is coming. Radio Communications of all types will become very useful in the very near future. As for this topic. Like they say. If you don't have nothing nice to say then don't say it at all. Now back to the topic.

Yes I have one and yes I still use it. 10 out 13 of the people on our local channel are licensed hams. 5 of which are extra class. Any kind of communication device is a great tool in emergency situations.
