To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi All,
Does anyone have any experience with the CDM1550-LS+ to do front panel programming “edit mode”. I've see it done once but couldn't get info on how they did it.

At work I have 100's of CDM1550-LS and HT1250LS+ that are going to go into the trash, I would like to see them reused for GMRS or HAM.

Thanks,
CJ

I'm not aware of any way to FPP the mobiles.
It can be done with the HTxxxx portables.

Even if, it only allows you to make certain changes. Things like alpha/numeric channel names requires the software.

It's MUCH easier to do this via the CPS.

I use one of these radios myself, and I've never figured out a way to program a frequency into the front panel, but you can do some things like edit the channels in a scan list.

Can you get those radios? They still fetch a decent price, I'd be interested in a few possibly.

here is the link

Yep, got the CPS runing on Ubuntu Linux Via Virtual Box running Win XP with a ribless cable. :) I've noticed the "edit mode" greyed out in the CPS.

Yea there really nice rigs (s-split) with the option board for recording and playback. Everyone around here is switching out of analog T-Band and going on P25.

Huh, I'll have to dig out a DTMF mic and give that a try sometime.
That video is the only reference I could find for FPP on the cdm1550LS. It seems that the radio is first put into ”Test Mode” while connected to a computer, then the DTMF mic is plugged in to complete the programming. I’m curious if you have tried this yourself and what was the result. Thanks. John

TEST MODE is also what's on the screen during writing of the codeplug.

If you watch carefully, the party clicks on WRITE TO RADIO menu bar icon and the CPS pushes the codeplug to the radio, the noise you hear is the radio rebooting, and then loading the freshly written codeplug. I don't think the aforementioned TEST MODE is a requirement of the FPP functionality.

I had dozens of these things in rotation way back when, never even tried this.

I haven't tried it. I have a DTMF mic somewhere in a box, I don't normally use it. I may give it a try this weekend. I brought my service monitor home from work and was going to see how the radio was doing.
