#monitor

#monitor on irc.starchat.net has been around for many many years. It has a mod-bot and a number of very knowledgeable folks that idle on it. The traffic has dropped since most of the utility HF monitoring has moved to #wunclub but I don't think that Glenn would mind having it back up with some traffic again.

I am not familiar with any IRC clients for mobiles, I guess that part of the tech craze has passed me by.
IRC is the original "chat room" and #monitor has folks from around the world that listen to radios (mostly idling) on it. I even used to chat when I was working in Antarctica ;-)
FireFox has a built in IRC client, ChatZilla. Point it to the server and room, Start chatting.

Any interest out there in reviving the idea of having a real time live chat IRC chat room for general scanning discussion with like minded people from RR forums?

I hang out on SlashNET servers already, joining a room like #RadioReference or #scannerchat would be nice.

let me know if anyone else is interested,

live chat will greatly increase the experience, think we are at the point of agreeing on a simple & free solution. I think irc is the way to go.

Shoutbox

I think a shout box would be better for this forum. For those who are not aware of what a shoutbox is, it's just a small chat box at the top of the forum where guests and members can post whatever you want. It updates automatically, and most can be added to a forum for free.

Here is an example of what I am talking about.

Team SLM -> Team SLM Forum

Simple, clean, and effective.

I see IRC a good idea to supplement a live feed, an event in progress, or those things not worth archiving.

Other items, such as tips, antenna construction, frequency information, etc, are worth archiving and therefore should probably remain in the forums.

As far as IRC goes, with all the free sites around, I feel RR doesn't really need to set up it's own IRC server.
All we need is the approval of RR, and a spot to list the link for the IRC server/channel, and the flexibility to post/remove the link when events dictate.
This could probably done easily under the existing Feed Provider Link for those running live streams.

This seems more like a wall you can write on like in the old days of BBSing. Doesn't seem like a place to hold a conversation, not even a short one. This might work for an announcement like "high speed chase, Loop 410 West, San Antonio", but if someone said "how do i program trunking on a BC785D, I dont feel like posting on the forum and waiting" then this wouldnt be ideal.

interesting concept though, thanks for posting it.

Exactly what I think it would be great for. Interesting live audio, or just random comments or questions that don't need a thread. I really hope the guys add this to the forum. I feel it would be a great addition to an already great forum.

Twitter hash tag for comments

How about creating a twitter hash tag (#) for comments. #rrtalk or something similiar. Thanks,

There's really no need, since we have the tavern forum. ;)
