Children's Book. Need your help please.

I am writing a children's book about a boy who listens to pilots of small planes when they come in for a landing at a nearby small airport.
His Dad bought him a basic radio to listen on.
Any suggestions as to the equipment his Dad might have bought him?
I want to be accurate but don't have a clue.
Sorry I am such a newbie.

What's the timeframe of the story? That would be important to get you the right vintage radio. Equipment has changed a lot over the years.

And this is probably a dead thread, but thinking about it later, if someone I knew had a kid interested in Airband listening I would probably offer one of my old analog scanners that is just taking up shelf space for free. Radio guys usually will have older units for spares and will often give the old units away to someone who can use them.
Just another angle to look at for your story.
