I commute between sacramento grass valley and stockton what would be the best chp codes for me to listen to?

If by "codes" you mean the frequencies, I would start in Grass Valley listening to the CHP on the Green channel of 42.54 base/42.24 mobile, and continue on the Green to hear the Auburn CHP "45" units. When you reach Sacramento County, tune in the No. Sacramento "46" units on the Gold channel of 42.12 base/42.20 mobile, and continue to the American River where you will switch to the Black channel of 42.46 base/42.70 mobile to hear the So. Sacramento "112" units. Upon entering San Joaquin County switch over to the White channel of 42.56 base/42.72 mobile.

OR...have a good antenna, have them all scanning, and listen to whatever is most interesting. You should be able to hear them all at the same time, with a good antenna/ground plane combo. Heck, you'll be able to hear the whole Bay Area too...throw Chico in, and you'll probably get Fresno/Bakersfield (maybe) areas by the time you get to Stockton.

Agreed. A mobile installation of a low-band antenna is picking up 100 miles or so on the VHF low.
