the 996P2 has a DB-9 port and the 325P2 has some other 5-pin "programming/charging" port only.... If anyone can steer me in the direction of how to clone from one to the other id be grateful... i havent found anything in the manual.... THANKS

The 325P2 uses "USB Mini B" and the front of the 996P2 does as well. No special one needed either - you can pick it up for a few dollars at your local computer store.

They have the same programming structure - so you can read from one and write to the other perfectly fine, using software like ProScan or Freescan.

It sounds like you want to clone one to the other, this is not possible.
What you need to do is use a program like Proscan, read in from one of the radios and then use the software to write to the other radio. Doing it direct between the radios is not possible.

You guys continue to promote ProScan and FreeScan while omitting Butel programming software. If you are going to mention the aftermarket software by name, it would be nice to include ALL of the competition… especially Butel and their ARC products which were providing third party software well before we heard of freeScan, the precursor of ProScan.

Disclaimer; I no not “intentionally” promote either but own both Butel and ProScan and find both very enjoyable to work with. I am especially appreciative of the offering of FreeScan when it first came out. The author’s efforts were commendable. I was running Butel and still do but being so appreciative of the work that went into FreeScan, and led to ProScan, I purchased ProScan as my way of saying thank you for your contribution to the hobby.

I believe they likely were seeing the "clone" feature that allows you to use a DB9 cable between 2 996P2's to do a clone - but as you said, not possible from the 996 to the 325.

I don't really think I need to do such a thing - I'll be continuing to advocate for ProScan, but thanks for mentioning it. One software for one price that covers almost every Uniden scanner ever made, plus the incredible support both technically and with suggestions from the creator, Bob, have certainly won this market for me, and I don't have much interest in suggesting nor trying anything else. FreeScan i always throw up as a suggestion for those who may not have the funds.

No matter what software you use, the concept is use a programming cable from the scanner with the info.
Both scanners should have come with one each.
Copy into the software, I would also save it onto the computer as well.
Be sure to change the startup screen as i.e. on startup the 325P2 could say 996P2 or vice-versa.
If it happens, won't effect how it works though.
Then upload it to the scanner that requires the new programming.

If especially all you want to do is that, then Freescan will suffice, it is indeed Free. The only thing is that it doesnt support DMR programming if you bought those addons from Uniden.
If you did or another inquires here, if someone purchased DMR programming for a scanner, it WONT transfer to the other scanner.

The other two software's mentioned do have 30 day free trials.

Freescan download info and some additional how-to videos at the bottom since your a premium subscriber.

Additionally these radios had firmware updates from Uniden several weeks ago, so apply those too.

What they did-

I have a 325P2 and 996P2. I also have a connector for joining 2 USB-A connectors. I tried cloning the scanners using 2 USB mini cables and that did not work. I also tried using a USB to serial adapter with and without a null modem cable connected to the rear port of the 996P2. That didn't work either. I remember that Paul, the former Uniden rep, said that it cannot be done. Using software, you need to download from one scanner and upload to the other.

I suggest using FreeSCAN for anyone not using DMR or NXDN since it is free to give a less expensive option. Some scanners are not capable of DMR or NXDN and FreeSCAN supports whatever they can do. If using DMR or NXDN, I recommend using Butel or ProScan software. I grew up using Butel ARC software for all of my scanners. I also have ProScan for helping other members. Personally, I find the Butel software easier to use. I do all custom programming from scratch in Excel files and then copy and paste into whatever software I am using. ProScan is much more versatile for programming many types of Uniden scanners. I already had the Butel software for most of the other scanners before ProScan came into existence. I use Sentinel for the HP1, HP2, BCDx36HP, and SDS100/200 scanners. Bob does a great job updating ProScan and your work is appreciated. It works for the BC780XLT. ARC780 was never updated and is no longer available. I suggest that anyone considering purchasing software try both the Butel ARC and ProScan software for the free trial period to decide which one works for you. Everyone has their own preferences in software and scanners.

I said you need to use a program "like proscan", simply as an example.
No matter what, it requires software and a PC, direct cloning between different models does not work.
