Hi Everyone!

I'm brand new to all this and in search of my first scanner. You can reference my "newbie" post at <http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=28168>. One of the factors I'm considering in selecting a first scanner is the ability to pick up Coast Guard comms. We vacation in Depot Bay and other coast locations and I'd like to take my scanner along to listen to the Coasties.

Does anyone have freqs for the CG?

Additionally, any feedback RE: which scanner I should purchase as a first one would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

PRO-97 if you don't need digital.
The signal stalker feature is great.

mancow--

Thanks for the rec on the 97. A couple of other folks have suggested that one to me as well. I've got it on "my list" as my next scanner.

In addition to what has been mentioned, there are other considerations.
The problem right now is the reconfiguration of the 800MHz band. The first phase is scheduled for completion next July. That should not affect non-trunked systems, but once the whole project is completed, many scanners will not be able to follow Motorola trunked systems.

Also, the state is planning a statewide digital system, so that should also figure into your choice. That could be in the 700MHz range that present scanners do not cover.

If you now live in an area that has no trunked system, I suggest you buy a Radio Shack PRO-83 as a temporary scanner. It is the new, smaller size and the sensitivity and audio quality are excellent, but it will not follow trunked systems. And it is very reasonably priced. By the time all settles down there will be new scanners available that will cover all problems mentioned above, and will serve you for many years.
