By Coatesville Fire Department September 10, 2010 On September 10Th, 2010 The Coatesville Fire Department along with an Engine out of the Westwood and Sadsburyville Fire Companies were dispatched to the 1800 block of Saginaw Drive for a reported apartment building fire.
Ladder 43, Engine 41-2, Ambulance 41-1, Assistant 41 (Paulukinas) and Chief 43 (Johnson) all made the response and were advised by the 911 center that the reporting party was advising they could see flames from a balcony in the apartment complex.
Coatesville Police Department were the first arriving units to find fire from the rear with smoke showing. Ladder 43 arrived to find a 3 story lightweight garden style apartment building with fire showing from rear and the roof. A working fire dispatch was struck adding the full companies from the initial dispatch and Medic 93. Assistant 41 arrived and assumed "Saginaw command" requesting a 2ND and 3rd alarm be struck for manpower. Ladder 43 stretched multiple hand lines to attack the fire while arriving personnel setup to do truck company operations led by Chief 44 Scott. Engine 41-2 laid a 5 inch supply line to the scene from the closest fire hydrant and connected a 3 inch line into Ladder 43.
Saginaw command requested the IST trailer and Comm 1 to the scene due to the additional alarms being struck. Chief 43 arrived and took over the command giving the operations to Assistant 41 additional ems units were requested due to a collapse that injured several firefighters. All firefighters were taken to area hospitals for injuries ranging from burns to broken bones. Chief 31 (Supplee) and Chief 39 (Allison) had the manpower pool setup in front of the fire building. Due to the collapse the command evacuated the building and defensive operations were setup to extinguish the fire.
Comm 1 arrived and setup the Mill view CP working very closely with Chief 43. At the request of Chief 43 mill view CP requested the American Red Cross and the utility companies to the scene to secure the utilities going to the fire building.
The fire was placed under control and command started releasing units leaving the city fire units to assist for the fire Marshall's investigation.
