• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Among the stuff I got when my Dad passed, is a Cobra 45WX. Seems to work great. When I scan through the channels, besides the typical 40, it runs through a bunch more - tagged 1-40H, and 1-40L. Any ideas what that's about?

Jeez, and after listening for 5 minutes - CB has changed. I read other threads on here mentioning a-holes blasting drivel endlessly. At least three channels have rednecks/hillbilly's and jive sounding talkers yapping away unintelligibly. Perhaps GMRS is the way to go?

Perhaps GMRS is the way to go?

Used to have a CB in my truck. After a long roadtrip I found there wasn't much useful traffic on CB anymore. In some areas, if you are listening at the right time of day, you'll hear something, but it's real hit and miss. The 1980's were a long time ago and CB is not what it was.

For some, CB is still useful. But for casual listening, it takes some patience. Band conditions will play into this. Yeah, there's a lot of people running really high power and just blabbering non stop. Useless to me.
With a good base setup, it may be fun to listen, make a few contacts, etc.

GMRS, on the other hand, is an entirely different radio service. While there are a lot of people using it, and the consumer grade equipment is out there, it's not well suited for making random contacts. Most users are running PL tones, and have specifically done this to filter out those that are not in their 'group'. Trying to make random CB type contacts to GMRS users would be difficult since you'd have to find the PL/DPL code they were using, and then they may not be really interested in talking to strangers.
Also, UHF doesn't do skip like CB does, so short range contacts are the norm. It would pretty much need to be someone driving through your immediate area.

Good luck finding those around you on anything but Citizen Band. Nothing wrong with having alternatives.

An integrated-NRC radio is the tech needed to deal with the noise such that one’s head can stay above water.

Skip is the daylight problem.

1989 doesn’t really figure any more.

This solar cycle peaks, then it’ll decline.
