• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Earlier today I was cleaning out a crawl space that’s under our staircase and I came across a pair of Cobra Micro Talk radios. I remember buying them years ago , I think it was at Walmart when then first opened a store here on Long Island. I don’t ever remember using them. I think I bought them to replace a handheld cb. They’re in like new condition. I put 4 AAA batteries in one of them and turned it on. I scanned thru the channels until I heard some traffic on ch 16. The 2 guys that were talking were describing places that are about 15 miles west of me. I tried tried talking but no reply. One of me questions is , how far can these transmit ? I’m in a highly populated suburban area on Long Island , mostly 2 story houses , not many building taller than 2 or 3 floors and lots of trees. Any help is appreciated.

Couple miles tops. A mile or so is probably more realistic. The other people could have been using higher powered GMRS radios, external antennas, could have been using CTCSS/PL tones, etc. Unless you are on a mountain (or the other people are), you will never reach 15 miles with those handhelds.

A few years back, radio shack sold one channel HTs. They were 500 miliwattt ( 1/2 watt).
My wife was at the shopping center and I was in the car going to pick her up.
We had to be better than 2 miles apart, but remember I was in the car HT and she was outside the mall HT.
Like Foresst Gump said. You never know what you going to get.
Have fun with the Cobras

Channel 16 can be used as a repeater output. Probably what you were hearing since repeaters are put on high buildings or mountains. It takes a different type of radio to access them, but the signals can be heard a long way on your radio.
