It looks like, as of today, Columbus' P25, Phase II system is now encrypted.

It has been submitted to the database. All Columbus Police and Columbus Fire and EMS talkgroup channels are encrypted.

I will submit the information to the database to reflect the changes. Just to confirm all talkgroup channels for Muscogee County sheriff and Marshall channels are encrypted.

Just deleted Muscogee County out of my scanner and all my favorite lists. I'm really surprised they hadn't done it before now. It's really a shame it has come to this through.

I worked for Columbus/Muscogee County public safety for over 30 years and there has never, ever been a problem with unencrypted communications. Until now, even their community relations has been good. I guess they did it just because they could.

Looks like the wave of the future. Before too long everything worth listening to will be in the dark. I think that the SDS100 will be the last scanner I'll buy due to the fact I don't need to spend upwards of $700.00 to listen to airplanes, garbage trucks, tow trucks and water departments. Back in the seventies i could listen to everything within two to three counties around Lee County Alabama. I lived in the northside of Opelika and had my scanner antenna 30' above my house along with my CB all directional and beams. I purchased a scanner AMP from Radio Shack and used to listen to car to car traffic in Tuskegee. Everything was in the open. Oh well i guess it's a sign of the times.

The land of broken calculators.
I stopped chasing public safety years ago. Every time I'd buy an expensive new scanner, they'd soon migrate to something else. I take solace in that I had grown up in the glory days of monitoring the airwaves and enjoyed that for a long time. Where I live now is in the clear (for now at least) but I still don't bother to listen. I send my condolences though and very sorry to hear this news.

It’s a shame, I lived in Columbus in the 70’s. There was plenty of activity. My local area is mostly in the clear. It’s a matter of time I guess.

I almost want to thank the CPD for finally doing this. I've written letters over the years to the mayor and the chief, getting empty promises that they had no plans to encrypt. Six months ago I spent $600 on an SDS100, only to have it fall silent last week.

Last week there was a quadruple murder here in Columbus, in what is becoming one of the most dangerous cities in America, but I guess the city government is too busy spending taxpayer money on new roundabouts and encrypted radio systems to care.

But like I said, I owe them some thanks because now I have been forced to expand my listening footprint beyond Muscogee County. I've also begun discovering many of the features that my scanner has, (ones that I've been too lazy to notice, up until now).

I think I'll even invest in a new high gain antenna.

We are having the same issue here in Pennsylvania and fortunately my County only has ops talk groups they can switch to, to go dark.

Someone here put their finger on the correlation between systems that are more likely to go dark and...

A group of us got together and were able to influence someone who was streaming a department that clearly said they were getting ready to go dark and they stopped. It's still in the clear... that was a long time ago.

It's time to smarten up guys. Just my two cents. Sorry for your loss.
