I've been hearing alot of talk about Comal County Sheriffs Office becoming encrypted and i've been getting questions on whether or not we'll still be able to hear them. If anyone has any insight on this situation it would be greatly appriceated.

Hope not, but they are a challenge to hear for anyone not carrying a SDS100 as is, the VHF simulcast kills any other scanner. My 436 won’t reliably pass audio on that site until I’m west of Bergheim and then I’m on the edge of reception anyhow.

Even in Garden Ridge, the VHF site is weak on my Unication G5 with an added VHF antenna. The New Braunfels 700 site is strong but only carries some of the Comal County channels and not all of the time.

Unless you are talking about the amplified drop in charger, you can't add a VHF antenna to the G5. The top antenna is only for 7/8 and the secondary antenna (VHF or UHF) is built into the unit. So, with the unit by itself, there's no way to add a VHF antenna to it unless of course you took the unit apart and did some stuff to it. Even with the amplified drop in charger, I don't remember if the secondary band is covered on the external antenna (7/8 is the primary band).

Just an FYI.

The drop in charger method is what I was referring to. I put antenna out of habit I guess. It still didn't work well. I finally searched through the Unication forum and found others had the same issue on the G5 drop in charger method on VHF.

Yeah if memory serves me right, the amplified charger doesn't affect the secondary band either. So the antenna on the amplified charger only affects the 7/8 side.

On a side note you could get a one directional amplifier from Unication for in building coverage for the vhf side.
