That's a decent supply and has a nice feature: Noise Offset. It's a dial that you can turn to change the frequency of the switching power supply circuitry, which can be a notorious source of RFI / EMI. But with the adjustable noise offset you can "tune out" the RFI / EMI so it's not getting into your receiver and what you are trying to hear.

I bet the 8600 won't live up to its expectations if you don't have an antenna that can showcase its capabilities.

I have a 7300 on a less-than-ideal-but-good-enough-for-me vertical and it's a fine (trans)ceiver for the money.

For those using the IC-7300, there is a nice update to the Win4IcomSuite software of a mini-control screen.

I can now comment on this subject since I have both. Each serves different purposes, the 7300 is the best all around choice. Since I am a ham and an active SWL, it is what I would choose if I were on a budget and only had minimal desk space.

I enjoy the R8600 for its P25 reception and its SDR functionality using HDSDR. I sold my RSPdx since the R8600 serves as a desktop receiver and an SDR using popular SDR software. I know the RSPdx would be handy for traveling, but I still think it underperforms against a standard portable receiver, just for listening purposes...... if I were needing an SDR for spectrum analysis, I'd happily lug the R8600 to the field.

And here is the link, from our wiki

And since we're talking about using it as a receiver, it does support the EiBi database
