So I'm just bored pondering some PC stuff on the net and you always see on TV and the net "Boost my PC.com" blah blah blah. I know 99% of that stuff is a scam. But I was wondering if anyone had some PC cleanup tips. I have a Windows 7 Cheapy Laptop that I program pagers and other things on and also have a XP PC that I'm looking to dust off and fire up. The Win7 PC is not infected but just runs sluggish. I know the local PC repair guy and I mean no discontent, but I don't expect the PC to live 100+ years. So I'm just trying to cleanup the PC the right way until she goes without spending the $. I have Avast AV and Malwarebytes on the Win 7 now. What has anyone else used? Or do the programs just cause more clutter than fix? Thanks in advance!!!

I use these tools, all run automatically. My PC is over 4 years old, it was Wally World's cheapest, it runs 24/7 on my feed, I program scanners, browse everything, dispatch for Alertpage, RR, FB, use it as a TV, watch movies, play games, do stuff for work, use it all the time when at home, and it is just as fast as the day I bought it.

C Cleaner which is available on the internet of things can help.
. +1 on this as well! Also Auslogics registry cleaner used daily will help too. I have a 6 year old Acer aspire 5253 and it works like a rocket. 73, n9zas

There also comes a time when all the tools in the world won't do anything. Registry cleaners can also cause problems. Sometimes the best way to restore performance is to back up your data and do a clean install of Windows!

Something I do about once a month is go into DOS mode, go up to the root directory, and type "del *.tmp/s/q". A tech told me this gets rid of all the temporary files, and makes surfing much quicker. I have noticed it does work.

. I've been going on 6 years now with the same win7 64bit machine and have used Auslogics registry cleaner every time I scan it, and never had it cause problems so that's debatable. :). 73, n9zas

A big thank you to everyone! Most of my sluggishness is opening stuff. Like when I open/use a "Insert Brand/Model Name Here" PPS, it opens up slow and then once its open it works ok.

I don't run Windows any longer, but I'm sure there is still a way to check to see which programs are running in the foreground and background, then look to see what processes are using resources.

You can then research anything you don't recognize.

Don't get anything that thinkers with or modifies the registry. One bad modification can leave you with an expensive rock. Stick to programs that clean or Defrag the hard drive. Defragging is one of the best ways to speed up your computer. Also see how much free space is left on your hard drive and remove little used programs. Having a nice chunk of free space on your hard drive helps it run faster too. Lastly go into startup programs(and currently running programs) and shut off what you don't really have to have running.

I would rate this as your best advice, adding more programs adds more junk. You need a clean install. Done it many times, you will be amazed at how fast your computer can be.

I have found that store bought units come with tons of stuff installed that is not needed to be there. I clean install of Win7 may help (not he one they provide with their bloatware).

I'm posting this from a Acer Aspire one netbook running a 60GB SSD, 2GB of ram and Win7 Ultimate. out of all the 3 things i changed, the HDD made the most differance, and small SSD's are cheap now. Ram was salvage from a burnt HP. It has its limitations, and worked much better with Linux Mint on it.
