I want to attach a set of computer speakers to a scanner so that it can be heard in two different rooms. In order to accomplish this, I need a basic set of computer speakers where the second speaker plugs into the main speaker with a 3.5mm mono plug so I can use an extension cable. All of the speaker systems I have looked at have the two speakers hard-wired together. Can anyone recommend an inexpensive set that has this feature?

not cheap

but more fun, how about using a Bluetooth setup?
we use one around the house and it is great.
just set up the radio in a good reception spot and carry the speaker around where you want.
our reason is that with simulcast here it can be hard to find a good spot.

The only wired ones I am finding are the, now discontinued, Creative SBS20

I second the Bluetooth suggestion. A Bluetooth speaker can be purchased for less than $20, and a transmitter for about the same money.

Since you are planning on running a wire to the second location, why not just cut and splice a long wire for the second speaker.

Computer speakers work well for scanners, but the BlueTooth idea is a great one. You need a cheap Bluetooth transmitter, they plug into the earphone jack of the scanner, then just use a Bluetooth speaker anywhere within range, which is usually anywhere in the house or yard.

And to answer the question before it is asked, no current scanners have BlueTooth built in so an external BlueTooth transmitter is required.

This is on my list of things to get...

+1 on Bluetooth, it's great if you're in range. That said, if you're still set on a hard-wired solution, I have my shop scanner on a set of Harman-Kardon computer speakers that do have separate jacks. I extended them about 30' apart and I can hear the scanner anywhere in the shop most of the time...well, so long as certain equipment isn't running. But I got them for a buck at a yard sale so I can't help with a source...but maybe you can do a search on that brand. Just my 2c.:)

P.S. You could always cut the speaker wire and extend it, even install jacks at that point...just be sure to keep the polarity the same.

The Creative Inspire T10 speakers do as you request. I have a pair at work and a pair at home. The sound is hardly studio quality but I use them on my computer to listen to my Unitrunker/dongle setup all day long. They run about $50 for the pair. I don't know if that falls into the inexpensive category or not. You'll need to make that call.

To get better sound from my BCD436HP, I bought a set of inexpensive computer speakers from Micro Center. Inland Pro Sound 2000, two speakers, AC power cord (no wallwart), 3.6 Watts, the speakers are 3" x 1.5". The cost $6.99.

The one thing that doesn't meet your requirement, the speakers are hard wired. But, you can just cut the wire to the external speaker, run speaker wire and splice it.

Micro Center also carries inexpensive speaker wire. $3.99 for 50ft.

Here are the links:
Inland Pro Sound 2000 Stereo Speakers. SKU664698

Inland Pro Sound 2000 Stereo Speakers 548859 I - Micro Center

JDI Tech 50ft indoor speaker cable 16 gauge. SKU 583864.

JDI Tech 50ft. Indoor Speaker Cable (16-Gauge, 4-Conductor) 578302 - Micro Center)

Note, you could also check out Targets or Kmart, they carry computer speakers for around $15.

One thing I forgot to mention: The Creative Inspire T10 speakers have an auxiliary input. (1/8" phone plug as I recall) I've used it to plug in my PRO 668 scanner.

Another solution? Rebroadcast your received audio with one of those car mp3 transmitters that often have an "Aux' input - then all you need is any FM portable radio.

Well if you want to go that route, and it's a great idea, there are plenty of low power AM and FM transmitters out there.

Um, well I was going to post a link to a Ramsey kit but it looks like as of 1 Jan they discontinued their hobbiest line of products! Sad, we lost another one.

Any of those pre-amp. computer speakers that come in a pair with their own batteries will put out lots of sound. That's what I use in car and speakers overcome road noise and exhaust and header noises.
