For anyone else who listens to Concord PD (maybe others as well), I have a question for you. I've been wondering this for quite some time and I finally got around to asking. I often listen to CPD and several times throughout the day I will hear either the dispatcher or unit (usually dispatcher) say "<unit #>,your last transmission was digital please say again". I've never understood why they sometimes say that the signal is digital when they don't receive the message, as I thought the entire frequency was in digital.

An answer to your question is that when they say the unit was totally digital or transmission was digital they are just saying please repeat because the unit was unreadable. When you are listening I bet you can't hear the unit calling in either, because your scanner will sound broken. You might be able to hear every other word. I hope this helps out and maybe someone else will have a more indept answer.

Well I figured thats what they meant, however sometimes I can here the unit when the dispatcher says they were unreadable, but sometimes I can't hear the unit however they can. I've just never understood why they say "you went digital".

Because to the unit receiving the signal, it sounds like R2D2 [Hence the terminoloy of "You went Digital"] just like a Nextel or any newer Cellphone with the Tin sound.

When something’s interferes with an analog signal you hear static. The more interference the more static. When something interferes with a digital signal numbers get lost. A digital signal is a string of 1's and 0's. If part of that signal gets blocked the signal changes. The voice becomes robotic or completely un-intelligible.
