I just bought a new BCD 396t and I'm having trouble getting started. Can someone give me the quickest easiest way to start listening to Indpendence PD? I plan on reading the manual cover to cover and programming everything I want it to do but right now all I want is to hear IPD.

Don't worry about the PD Tac talkgroup though. It's encrypted and you won't hear a thing. Check out IndepMO.com great website if you haven't been there.

If your scanner came with a programming cable like i believe it should go d/l the demo version of the Butel Software for your scanner.

Just google butel or ARC396 and something should pop up to take you to their site. You will save SO much time programming by using the software, and if you are a premium member to the RR.com you can actually upload frequencies directly from this website so there is very little work to do other than download the frequencies you want to the software then uploading them to your scanner!

I use ARC software on my BCT-8 and 246t and don't know how people program without it!

I would rather not install more software. I already have everything from uniden. There must be something I have overlooked. It looks easy. But I'm not finding what I think I need.

Independence is a Motoral P25 700mhz system. When you program manually-
System type- Motorola P25
System name - It's obvious Independence
Modulation - FM
Set whatever system quick key # you want
Set Frequencies in order from the database
Go to Edit Group and select New Group
Name this group (Police Department or whatever)
Set whatever group quick key # you want
Go to Edit Channel to enter the Talk Group ID's and to name each ID
Go to Edit TGID to enter the tgid, edit name (northside), edit tgid (36)
After entering the system name, system type, setting frequencies, setting modulation, setting group name, editing channels, edit TGID and naming them you should be able to hit scan and begin listening. Any other questions or problems, holler!!

If you're using the UASD software
Make a new system- System name (Indep.)
System type- Motorola P25
Click on Trunking option and input all frequencies and set the modulation to FM, click OK
Click on "G" for a new group
Click on "C" to add the channels (all the tgid's)
Enter 36 for the tgid and name it Northside and go down the line
Set you system quick key for this system ( 1, 2, 3, whatever)
You can name your group PoliceDepartment for all police talkgroups and a new group for the FD. then set each group quick key as you feel ( PD is 1, FD is 2 whatever you can even put them all in the same group)
Save the system, make a new "scanner configuration" and name it. Edit the configuration, click on systems, you should have Independence on the right side, click on it and click add from database. From there, Download you configuration to the scanner and friggin' enjoy it like I do!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any questions, holler!!!

Thanks for the help and great step by step info. I must have figured it out at the same time you posted though. This scanner is pretty amazing. I was just getting to excited and wanted to listen to IPD. Now that I have that I will enter everything else.

One more question though. How do I know which is north, center and south? I want to identify them.

Northside is going to be the name of the channel tgid. When you program the tgid# 36 you can then edit the name of that channel. It's at the very top of the menu. Edit Name under Edit Channel. BTW, I love listening to IPD! They are the best city around! Do you live in the city, if so, they have a city law that makes having a scanner in a vehicle illegal unless you have a HAM license. I haven't ran into this (not accusing myself of anything) but I sure wouldn't want to lose my $500+ scanner. Keep in mind!!!!! Happy Scanning!!!

Or its possibly when you go to edit channel, all your tgid's will come up and you'll have to select 36 for Northside and that will bring up Edit Name. I'm not looking at my scanner right now.

Go to Independence system, go to Set Frequencies, and scroll down to New Frequency. From there it will ask you to input the frequency. You'll begin to get the hang of it no problem. You can't learn new things unless you ask questions. BTW, I got a good buddy that lives off of 291 and Salisbury. There was a police chase that came right down that way eastbound passed Jennings and he bailed out in the cemetary down the way. He got to see some of the action. I wish I still lived in Independence but Blue Springs is close enough. Not illegal to have my radio. Pry it out of my dead hands is what I'd say.....
