The Nextel falcon series phones (i730, ect.) have built in GPS.

When hooked to a laptop you can use the phone as a standard NMEA type device for your Delorme maping software or other applicaiton.

I am thinking, if I have a few extra nextel phones, why not connect one to the DB9 connector of the 996T with the serial cable: http://www.talkaboutwireless.biz/images/PRODUCT/medium/1123.jpg

I am wondering if I need any gender changer or null modem cable for this application. I dont think it will require either.

Anyone done this?

I don't think it would work. Your computer needs a driver installed to process the data from the phone. The 996 would not be able to do this.

The "data" coming from the phone is the exact same thing as the 996T would be getting from any other GPS recevier.

It shouldnt matter if I connect a NEXTEL i730 (acting as a GPS recevier with true NMEA output) or a DELORME Earthmate (GPS recevier with NMEA output.)

Someone else want to chime in here?

Why don't you just hook it up and let us know? Especially if you're going to tell anyone who answers you (that you don't agree with) that they are wrong. It sounds like you just want someone to say that you are right, which you may very well be.

your not going to need a driver if its straight serial. you'd only need a driver if the phone was using a serial to usb adapter like some gps's do, then you'd need a driver for the chipset in that adapter to get the OS to recognize it. it should work just fine

Right now my 996T is mounted indoors on my desk. I plan to add one in a mobile situation after next year, but not yet. As such, you post is less useful than mine - so why not save the bandwidth, please!
