Connection Question

I'm new to "non stock" antenna, I have a Yagi antenna with this connector

What type of adapter would I need in order to connect this to the back of the uniden 996T?


and for wits and giggles...

some form of antenna, I was told it was a Discone or ground to plane type? Any suggestions?

(there are 4 elements on the bottom, picture only shows 3)

Looks like an N to me, being on a yagi also points to that since a ton of those use them.

The bottom is a groundplane antenna, that's the four lower radials which looks like it's actually an adaptor for a mobile antenna. With the double coil (not matching) I think that is an older AS antenna, one of the MON series. Or maybe a spectra?


edit, don't think it's an austen spectra now, must be one of the AS mon series but they are so hard to find info anymore.

Buy an N male to BNC (insert gender here) adapter.

It's just your normal, run of the mill inline SO-239. It connects to the same PL-259 that comes standard on most transceiver coax, including CB coax. Like others said, all it takes is a screw on adapter from any Radio shack to convert it to BNC, and plug into your scanner.

I had that antenna once, about twenty years ago when it was brand new. It's the Antenna Specialist MON-57, I believe. It's badass. I received systems a hundred miles away easily. Even keyed up repeaters four counties away with a 4 watt walkie talkie. I wish they still made those.

Sure enough. How weird. I had that antenna, and it came with an SO-239 pigtail on it.

www.thewireman.com can make a cable for you if that's what you need. They are nice people and will offer suggestions. Otherwise you can get an adapter from any number of vendors.

It looks like an Antenna Specialists MON52 or 53 mobile antenna on a base station type mount. It is an all band antenna with "enhanced" 800 MHz.

That is a ground plane antenna and the connector is an "N" connector, and a crimp on connector at that. There are many adapters are available. I have one of those antennas for swapping over to from a Larsen NMO-150/450/800 when I want to improve my low band reception. Bought it a long time ago and it's still a great antenna. Those elements you are talking about are actually radials, ground plane radials.

another quick question, How high should I mound Either antenna? there's some trees around, should I get a mast or would they be ok Mounted on the roof?

Since when is an N connector screw in and that small? That's a TNC common to mobile antennas and that looks like a VHF/UHF dual band NMO mount with a radial adapter plate. Heck, I used to make them out of scrap metal and brazing rod.

Just use the appropriate adapter and better coax than that crappy RG-58U which is OK for short runs in the car but a long run on the base will lose more signal than you can shove into it. I use a TNC to F adapter and RG-6U quad shield CATV coax and it works just fine with an F to BNC adapter on the back of the scanner.

Oh, don't forget to tape the outdoor connection unless you want to get your scanner all wet. Heh, think I'm kidding? I hate to admit a fellow ham forgetting to seal a connector, he ended up with garden hose for a transmission line.

It's an N connector and they have always been thread in type connectors.

That's a great antenna for Low Band, usta have one. Although mine had a SO230 (UHF) not an N
