Contrary to the near bottom of the solar cycle...HF is not actually muerto...

Just the RSPdx unit, SDRUno and a 40 meter 1/2 wave dipole. I live about 2 miles north of MacDill Airforce Base (home of Central Command).

I used to listen a lot when the conditions were "terrible" and heard a lot of good stuff. A lot of it was on the military freqs that had stronger signals burying the weaker stuff in normal conditions. Never assume there is nothing to listen to on HF.

Solar cycle 25 has been steadily filling up the static solar south hemisphere with active regions which adds to emerging flux. Magnetic equator has become more of a sine-wave pattern which can be seen in HMIIB. Active regions shown as white (north polarity) and black (south polarity). Where they border is where the magnetic equator is. It is more longitudinal of a magnetic equator opposite to solar minimum we see the magnetic equator as a straight line with a slight curve. The bending of the magnetic equator is from the active regions. In a nutshell the present activity shows north and south polarity willing to interact. These active regions are long lived and lasting complete solar rotations.

Magnetically north polarity is active. The static equator is not relevant. 10.7cm radio flux will have periods of high spikes for 12 months. As the magnetic equator becomes more bent more active regions appear.

I also have to bring to everyone's attention that a solar cycle is one complete package of prominence, active regions, sunspots (a side effect), 60 degree latitude filament (dark areas on AIA193) not just sunspots. Flux emerges in active regions without sunspots. Their filament at the bases are where the flux comes from.

More advanced observations show much more about what we call a solar cycle. Their is actually 500 years of cyclic activity that is partially recorded. I am thinking these trends are only holistic. These trends do not represent future cycles. These trends are badly misunderstood. We have to wit 250 more years to see exactly what this is. Butterfly diagrams showing the tips of the bands ebbing further poleward each cycle slightly.

There goes the government funding down the tubes.

No one had ever said that HF propagation was muerto (dead) - very poor, yes, but not dead - at least not yet.
A lot depends on what one is looking for on HF. If SWBC is the focus, it would appear that most of those broadcasters have disappeared into a black hole, but it's mostly because many of them have abandoned HF in a move either to the internet or to non-existence. There is still lots to be found in SSB mode, ham QSOs, of course, but various digital utilities, as well. The time of day is important, too.
