If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have two Kenwood radios that use the same programming software but one is a portable and the other is a mobile. Channel-wise, I wish them to be programmed identically. Setting-wise, there are many differences, as they have different controls. One example is the TK-7180 has GPS settings than the TK-2180. The buttons are not the same between the two radios, but they have the same capabilities when it comes to the actual channels programmed in. I have tried copying and pasting, but this does not work. Any other ideas to make it easy to "clone" the channels but not the settings?

I'm not at my PC with the programming software, but try this:

Open up the software, open up the programming file for your 7180.

From the top bar, select "Model" then "Product Information".
From there, you can change the radio model to TK-2180.
It'll thrown an error at you, but just acknowledge it. Basically it's telling you that some of the settings will be lost because of differences between the mobile and portables.
The Channel/Zone info should all remain. You'll need to go through and set the key functions and maybe a few others, but that will get you started off in the right direction.

I'm doing this from memory, so if it doesn't work, let me know and I'll help you sort it out...

It can be done. Open the one with all of the correct channels and go to file export and save it. Open the other one and import it. All of the channels will be the same. Just change the rest of the setting and your good to go.

mmckenna's way is the easiest way to go and works. It works with most Kenwood radios as long as they are in the same software and exact same bandsplit. I manage my TK-2180/7180s like this, my TK-3180/8180s, and my TK-5710/TK-5210s.

The problem with this method is I have A LOT of radio-specific settings on each radio. I just tried the method with export/import but unfortunately, it renamed all my zone names to zone numbers and it made all of the channels Wide and defaulted to scan. That was a lot easier than changing all the many radio-specific differences though; closer to what I was wanting.

What you want is zone merge. This will copy just channel information on a zone by zone basis. You can then load a new archive and plug those zones back into the second radio.
