Corpus Christi is currently in negotiations with Nextel regarding rebanding, which was described as cluster... Initially CCPD/NCSO had planned to go to 700 Mhz and vacate the 800 Mhz band altogether however apparently cost prohibits this. Although this area isn't scheduled for rebanding until the 4th tier they are hoping to have the transition be a "done deal" long before that time. The city thought that Nextel would furnish all new equipment but apparently that is not the case, Nextel wants to give them used Motorola units. So the entire issue of rebanding, 700 MHz and equipment is up in the air. Also there is "nada" city funds available for any radio communications enhancements, rebanding or related equipment.

Only a couple of channels currently in use at the Violet site would be involved in the rebanding but apparently as it stands now it may require a complete re-assignment of all channels at all tower sites. This is a big dispute.

In addition to the Shoreline, Violet and Flour Bluff sites an additional 7 channel site will be opening in the near future on Wood River Dr. in Calallen. CCPD is managing the Kleberg/Kingsville and the San Pat Co systems, both are digital. CCPD analog traffic is also broadcast on the San Pat - Ingleside site. Nothing is broadcast in Kleberg by CCPD, althought communications with San Pat, Kleberg and CCPD/NCSO can all be done by CCPD, ie interoperability.

CCPD/ NCSO also have a remote 800 MHz site located in George West. This is an CCPD EOC site that will be activated during an evacuation and will serve as a relay to San Antonio EOC thru their south most tower. I'm not sure whether this is functional at this time or has even been tested.

The new city owned city wide WiFi will allow better coverage of the MDT's and will probably be the primary link for them. Although the WiFi is powered by and installed on AEP power poles and will probably go down in the event of an electrical outage to an area. Hence they will have to try to revert to a simplex channel on the TRS fror the MDT as they do now.

Currently there is no plan to have Traffic or Patrol go to digital nor their dispatch. All other police divisions, ie Narc, Specail services etc are Provoice and will remain so, EMS and FD will remain analog as will all related dispatchers.. Needless to say City Comms is not a happy place these days.
