The 396XT default step size for the VHF 150.8000—161.9950 is 5Khz. I changed mine to 7.5khz which is half step size of the old tuning increment of 15khz. If you look at the color spreadsheet of progression to Narrowband mode in the USA, I see no mention of 7.5khz but only 12.5khz. I've read conflicting information about narrowbanding. So in terms of narrowbanding, what is the correct step size for this part of the spectrum? Is it only 12.5khz for VHF? Click the link below to see the chart.

Use 7.5 kHz steps. You are confusing scanner search step size (or channel spacing) with occupied bandwidth.

It appears so. Thanks. What do you have your radio set (search step size) for 160.00-174.00 ?

Ok, I just answered my own question after reading the FAQ's on this topic:

The FCC private land mobile narrowbanding rule does not affect the federal government land mobile bands (138-144, 148-150.75, 162-173.2, 173.4-174, and 406.1-420 MHz). They were nawrrowbanded years ago. Their deadline was in 2008.
